The Clean Tech Malawi is a not-for-profit registered society set up in association with CCODE, Eco Matters, Malawi and TARA, India supported by German Cooperation through GIZ.

What we do

We promote energy efficient and environment friendly building material technologies and guide their applications to improve habitat energy efficiencies.

Our Mission

To contribute to Malawi’s low carbon growth through energy efficient and cleaner building material production systems.

Our Objectives

To build local capacities in the building material and infrastructure sector in Malawi to foster inclusive growth and poverty reduction thereby improving quality of life and enhancing income generating opportunities.

Our Team

The Clean Tech Malawi has brought together some of the finest brains and capacities available in the world on building material and construction technologies. It comprises of a multi-disciplinary expertise in the fields of research, product development, machines and equipment development and servicing, implementation, training and policy advocacy. The team is well spread over Malawi, India, Germany, Switzerland and other countries.

Zilire Luka

Advisor – Enterprise Development

Zilire Luka holds Bachelor of Humanities Degree, is currently working as Executive Director for at CCODE. He is an Urban Development specialist and advocates for inclusion of voices, and the participation of the urban poor- men, women and youths in development initiatives. He has 10 years’ experience in result-oriented program management surrounding urban planning; resilient livelihoods; water and sanitation in informal settlements and peri-urban areas.

Wonderful Hunga

Policy and Advocacy Manager

Wonderful Hunga holds a BA in Journalism in addition to certificates in advocacy and social research. He is currently working as the Policy and Advocacy Manager at CCODE. An accomplished researcher and writer, Wonderful has interests in building technologies that have potential to empower marginalized groups such women as well as save the environment from depletion. Since 2011, Wonderful has been involved with the Vertical Shaft Brick Kiln technology in Malawi from its inception phase. He is now involved in the dissemination of the technology.

Grace Phiri Zimba

Construction Project Management Expert

Grace Zimba is a Graduate Architect by professional. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Construction Economics and Management. Currently working as a Project Engineer on KULIMA- MIERA Project under GIZ Malawi. Her role is to support the Project Manager in all construction and building material-related activities during the implementation of the project “promotion of an environmentally friendly building materials”. Her expertise lies in managing construction contracts in the Construction industry where she has worked for over 10 years.

Lameck Chingota

Structural Analyst and Construction Expert

Lameck Chingota is a registered graduate structural Civil Engineer by profession. He has 7 years’ experience in construction management, structural design and analysis. Currently working as an Engineer at GIZ MIERA programme under the environmentally friendly building and materials project. His role at GIZ is to support the project manager in the organization and logistics for all construction and building materials-related activities during the implementation of the project "Promotion of an environmentally friendly building materials sector in Malawi".

Dr. Soumen Maity

Technology and Business Specialist

Dr. Soumen Maity is a Material Scientist by profession and currently leads the Technology Management Business at Development Alternatives Group. He anchors the interface between innovation and business, guides and mentors the Clean Technology systems and also leads the innovation and incubation of technologies into successful business ventures. His expertise lies in the building material sector wherein he has been instrumental in exploring commercial approaches to utilization of industrial waste, improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental emissions.

Avinash Kumar

Civil and Construction Expert

Avinash Kumar is a Civil Engineer by profession. Currently working as a Manager (Research) at Development Alternatives Group. He plays a lead role in developing new type of building materials and test its application in pre-fab elements. He is also instrumental in developing new products and technologies in cement and concrete thereby ensuring their sustainability. His expertise lies in the building material sector wherein he has been doing civil and construction work utilizing different kinds of industrial waste.

Sudhir Sah

Enterprise Development Expert

Sudhir Sah is a Mechanical Engineering graduate, is currently working as a Manager (Sustainable Enterprises) at Development Alternatives Group. He has 6+ years of diverse experience in Consulting, Project Management and Business Development encompassing sectors like Renewable Energy, Technology Validation and Green Entrepreneurship. He is strong with conceiving, planning, executing, controlling and closing projects. He has experience working with people in the least developed regions, big corporate and government organizations.

Debaprasad Das

Green brick and operation expert

Debaprasad Das is a Mechanical Engineering graduate, is currently working as Deputy Manager at Development Alternatives Group. He has more than 15 years of experience in VSBK operation, green brick production and equipment installation and commissioning.

Shariq Meyraan

Construction Expert and Concrete Technologist

Shariq Meyraan is a civil engineering graduate and has 4 years of experience in construction and concrete technology especially in the ready mixed concrete quality control unit. He is currently working as a construction professional at GIZ MIERA programme under the environmentally friendly building and materials project. His role at GIZ is to support the construction manager in the execution of the construction projects and building materials-related activities during the implementation of the project "Promotion of an environmentally friendly building materials sector in Malawi"

Shrashtant Patara

Advisor - Project Planning and Management

Shrashtant Patara is an architect by training. He has been with the Development Alternatives Group since 1988, providing strategic direction, programme and enterprise development expertise in the areas of habitat, renewable energy, water, waste management and micro enterprise development. Through engagement across scales, his work has been focussed on co-creation of multi-stakeholder eco-systems that promote entrepreneurship through social innovation, capacity building and access to technological, financial and marketing support services.

Dr. Arun Kumar

Advisor - Technology and Business

Dr. Arun Kumar is President of Development Alternatives group. He has wide experience in the areas of technology innovation, systems engineering, organization of research and general management. Since 1989, he has been responsible for innovation and development of technology systems required for large-scale creation of sustainable livelihoods. He has been responsible for development and commercialization of sustainable technology packages in the areas of low cost construction, decentralized energy production, cleaner production technologies, biomass utilization and paper recycling.
